St. Peter Feast
Terrasini
has a strong seafaring tradition and inclination. Here
the sea breeze is strong, 365 days a year, to have fun
or to have a job. Sailors in Terrasini have a very ancient
historical tradition and can display one of the greater
fishing fleet of Sicily.
To protect them, there is St.
Peter, holy fisherman and soul fisherman. The sailors
are very devoted to him, they celebrate him in summer
with a typical procession of the simulacrum of the saint,
across land and sea.
In fact the saint is carried on
a beached ship and taken through the streets of the
Marina quarter, then the statue is placed on a fishing
boat and leaves the harbor with a lot of other ships,
to do a suggestive procession across the sea.
The fishermen
thanks the saint for the good years and pray him to
protect them from the storms and from that strange destiny
that indissolubly joins the fishermen and the blue expanse,
bearer of life and death.
The feast go on with a giant
fish panful, very appreciated by the tourists; with
typical folk games e.g. the “antenna a mare”,
a balance proof on a slimy horizontal pole over the
sea. T
he feast ends finally with the tradional fireworks
on sea, fantastic background of the “faraglioni”,
as if they thanks St. Peter for the graces.. |
